Kenna Stimmel, a graduate of Margaretta High and the all-time Ohio state record holder in the girls pole vault at 14-6.25 (4.43m) who has signed with Virginia Tech, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing June 18 at the adidas Outdoor Nationals at Irwin Belk Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. Stimmel is one of two athletes with 14-foot clearances entered in the meet, along with Tessa Mudd of Charleston Collegiate High in South Carolina, a Princeton commit. Mudd prevailed against Stimmel in March at the adidas Indoor Nationals in Virginia Beach by a 14-1.25 (4.29m) to 13-9.25 (4.19m) margin. Stimmel speaks about her strong faith and shares how she has dedicated her performances throughout her senior year to her late grandfather, who passed away in July, and how she honors him in every competition with his name printed on her shoes. She revisits clearing 14-6.25, also surpassing the Margaretta boys record, on her first attempt at the Ohio Division 3 state final and having three opportunities at the national high school record 14-9.75 (4.51m) and how Stimmel hopes those attempts benefit her in the future. Stimmel also analyzes being one of only eight prep female athletes in history to clear 14-6.25, including three this year with junior twin sisters Amanda Moll and Hana Moll also achieving the feat for Capital High and Northwest Pole Vault Club in Washington. She expresses gratitude for the coaching of her father Brian Stimmel and Shawn Beamer for all their wisdom and insight to help her progress and develop with her vaulting after more than a decade of participating in gymnastics, along with the opportunities to continue to play volleyball and train to be an all-state diver. Stimmel examines Margaretta placing second overall behind Colonel Crawford by a 44-41 margin in the Division 3 state team race, also contributing points with a victory in the 4x100-meter relay, a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash and a fourth-place effort in the 100-meter hurdles. She speaks about her decision to attend Virginia Tech and to have the opportunity to be mentored by veteran coach Bob Phillips, in addition to training with Julia Fixsen, as well as several post-collegiate athletes. Stimmel also explains how significant it is for her family to have a pair of daughters vaulting next year in college, along with her sister Kassidie competing at NCAA Division 2 program Grand Valley State in Michigan. She also speaks about the opportunity to take part in a beach vault in July in Michigan, her final summer event.
